Tobin Studio Sessions presents
SONGWRITERS IN THE ROUND: Roger Blevins, Jr., Tom Meny, and Moorea Masa
GA Tickets: $20
This Studio Sessions concert marks the return of Roger Blevins & Tom Meny to the Carlos Alvarez Theater after last year’s “Soulwriters” show. Moorea Masa last visited Texas as part of Allen Stone’s acclaimed 2016 U.S. tour. These three soulful singer songwriters will share their talents, songs and stories in this intimate "in-the round” performance. Session host Blevins says, “These are two of my favorite artists out there. I’ve had the chance to pay with Tom several times now, and without exception people are blown away. I mean, when someone like Glen Hansard goes out of his way to bring Tom onstage…that’s a special talent. And Moorea is a voice you must hear. I discovered her last year on Allen Stone’s tour and her performance floored me. I’m really looking forwarding to being completely upstaged, hehe…"
Roger Blevins, Jr. (host)
As the frontman and songwriter for the band Mingo Fishtrap, Roger Blevins Jr. has shared his songs with music lovers across the globe. Championing the cause for soulful Americana, he has soaked up the flavors, stories and landscapes of the group’s travels. A Mississippi native who has settled in Texas, Blevins comes by music honestly, following in the footsteps of his Louisiana bassist father and a grandmother who taught him hymns sitting side by side on the organ bench. After attending the University of North Texas’ pretigious College of Music and forming Mingo Fishtrap in a cramped campus dorm room, it wasn’t long before Austin became home base and the band was out on the road. Mingo’s critically-acclaimed release, On Time landed them on the Americana charts as one of the 100 most played albums of the year. “[Blevins] evokes all the great soul shouters but replicates none of them and, like the old masters, knows how to lift a good melody, not overtake it.” (Something Else)
The 24 year old, Portland native, Moorea Masa, brings an organic Northwest vibe to the more traditional R&B sounds. Profoundly moving, she blends sumptuous soul together with stripped-back folk harmonies. She has toured nationally as a solo act, and worked as a featured vocalist and backing singer with an array of artists, including El Vy, Allen Stone, Nick Waterhouse,The Decemberists, Ural Thomas and the Pain, and Nu Shooz. She released her debut EP last May, and is working on her next album in collaboration with producer Jmost (Emily King) which is set to be released next Spring. "Her voice is a charming blend of silken tonal clarity, luxuriant phrasing and perfectly weighted power and restraint, she coexes the listener an instinctive emotional response and she seduces with her tenderly emotional delivery" (Next2Shine)
Tom first played guitar as an impressionable 10-year-old, but it would be another two decades before he would share his talent with an audience. Now, as the 2016 Telluride Bluegress Festival’s Troubadour Competition finalist, 2015 Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Winner and with millions of streams (and fans like Glen Hansard), he’s making up for lost time. With his latest offering, Love & Play, Tom builds on his catalog with an album of heartfelt and well crafted songs; witty but accessible, hopeful yet grounded in a stark and detailed reality. A standout in the impressive pool of Austin's singer songwriters.
