Songwriter rendezvous is three Texas-based singer songwriters in one night...jamming out their favorites and the telling the stories behind the music.
Sorrowfully, Jimmy LaFave will not be performing Friday night at the Songwriter Rendezvous, however his music will be well represented and his stories will be wholeheartedly shared. LaFave has been battling a terminal cancer and now, in this final stage, must focus on immediate needs to assure comfort in, and quality of, the time left. While battling this disease, LaFave remained upbeat and courageous- that spirit will be embodied Friday as his friends and fellow musicians Sam Baker, Slaid Cleaves and Eliza Gilkyson, invite you to join them celebrate the endlessness of friendship through music and memories during the Songwriter Rendezvous.
From the musicians:
Dear friends and fans of Jimmy Lafave,
It's with a heavy heart that I must announce that our dear compadre Jimmy has now reached a stage of his transition where he is relying on oxygen for breathing and can no longer walk and talk , much less stand or sing. We regret he will not be able to participate in our Tobin Center event this Friday.
We all just want him to be comfortable and at peace in this final phase of his life. We have decided to go ahead and do the show, using this opportunity to celebrate Jimmy's life and music and share our memories with you. It's a way to move through our own grieving process together, with like-minded souls.
The promoters will refund your tickets if you choose not to attend but we hope you'll stay on board and spend the evening with us.
Eliza Gilkyson, Sam Baker, Slaid Cleaves
Eliza Gilkyson is a two-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and activist who is one of the most respected musicians in Folk, Roots and Americana circles. Her songs have been covered by Joan Baez, Bob Geldof, Tom Rush and Rosanne Cash. She is a member of the Austin Music Hall of Fame, she has won countless Folk Alliance and Austin Music awards, including 2014’s Songwriter of the Year.
Slaid Cleaves spins stories with a novelist’s eye and a poet’s heart. Twenty years into his career, the celebrated songwriter’s Still Fighting the War spotlights an artist in peak form. Cleaves’ seamless new collection delivers vivid snapshots as wildly cinematic as they are carefully chiseled. Dress William Faulkner with faded jeans and a worn six-string for a good idea. “Slaid’s a craftsman,” says Terri Hendrix, who sings harmony on “Texas Love Song.” “He goes about his songs like a woodworker.”
