Elgar’s Enigma Variations is a collection of fourteen variations on an original theme. “Enigma” is the name of the theme, and each variation is a musical sketch of one of his close friends, including his wife, Alice, his publisher, Augustus, and himself. Elgar wrote “the sketches are not ‘portraits’ but each variation contains a distinct idea founded on some particular personality or perhaps on some incident known only to two people”. Joining the Variations on the program are works by Vaughan Williams, Delius, Walton, and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance.
In 2017-18, Maestro Sebastian Lang-Lessing returns to lead the San Antonio Symphony in a season commemorating the 300th anniversary of our great city with a festival to match the occasion. The Tricentennial Festival will feature Beethoven’s Eroica, Ellington’s The Three Black Kings, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and so much more!
