Honoring Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, we open our program with his “Three Dance Episodes” from On the Town, a 1944 hit musical about three American sailors during wartime. The San Antonio Symphony’s own principal cellist, Kenneth Freudigman will perform Bloch’s Schelomo, a musical interpretation of the Biblical book Ecclesiastes, where the voice of the cello takes on the reincarnated voice of King Solomon. Finally, the Symphony brings you Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.” This work was written “in the spirit of national American melodies” and reflects San Antonio’s rich cultural background during the city’s Tricentennial.
