BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
World premiere of a new Prequel originally commissioned by Ballet San Antonio
Choreographed by Bruce Wells
“Belle unlocks the love that was hidden in the Beasts heart …in return The Beast gives Belle the world she dreamed of in her books.” Bruce Wells, Choreographer
A classical ballet in two acts, this version of Beauty and the Beast follows the traditional story line of Belle & her Prince.
The production begins with a new Prequel for Ballet San Antonio. First, we meet the loving parents of both Belle and the Prince, quickly proceeding to their births and following them through to their adolescence. Young Belle dreams of the world through her books, the young Prince is spoiled and arrogant. A Beggar woman comes into the village and is immediately rejected by the young Prince. Angered by his actions she puts a curse on the young boy. If by his 21st birthday he has not learned compassion in his heart she will return and transform him into an ugly beast.
Ten years pass before they meet again…
Belle’s father becomes a widow and is raising Belle on his own. The young Prince has become selfish with no love in his heart. As the beggar woman promised she returns and is again rejected by the Prince. The beggar woman magically transforms into a beautiful enchantress and at the same time places a curse on the Prince turning him into an ugly beast. Belle’s father preparing to go into the city asks his daughter what can he bring her. “Only a rose for none grow here”… is her reply. Under the dark of night Belle’s father finds a rosebush and immediately plucks a rose for his daughter.
What follows is a series of Divertissement, Pas de Deux and solos which tell the story of Beauty and the Beast to its final conclusion in true fairy tale fashion … happily ever after.
The Prequel of Bruce Wells’ Beauty and the Beast is an original commission by Ballet San Antonio for Ballet San Antonio and will premiere at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on October 19, 2018.
