About The Show
Five years ago, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opened its doors and permanently transformed the landscape of cultural arts in San Antonio. Thanks to the inspired vision of its founders, J. Bruce Bugg, Jr., Judge Nelson Wolff, and the Honorable Phil Hardberger, The Tobin Center has firmly established itself as a world-class venue and is now recognized as one of the top performing arts centers of its size in the world! Since opening in 2014, The Tobin Center has welcomed over 1.2 million arts patrons, including 250,000 students through our Generation NEXT Education Initiative.
The Tobin Center’s Fifth Anniversary Gala will take place on October 24, 2019 at 6:00 PM. The anniversary celebrations will honor H-E-B for its leadership as a founding corporate donor of The Tobin Center and as an outstanding supporter of the arts community in San Antonio. The Fifth Anniversary Gala will also feature the “Empress of Soul,” and ten-time Grammy Award-winning artist, Gladys Knight, who was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time. The evening will include an auction of unique memorabilia from entertainers who have performed at The Tobin Center, a distinctive seated dinner, an exclusive performance by Ms. Knight, and ending with the renowned after-party and VIP Lounge.
The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry.
A humanitarian and philanthropist, Knight has devoted to various worthy causes, including the American Diabetes Association – for which she is a national spokesperson, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention, and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honored by numerous organizations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Today, Knight and husband William, along with various other members of the family, oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters. She is a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, performer, restaurateur, and businesswoman with a spiritual outlook on her life. Her faith in God has been the driving force behind all of Knight’s endeavors, guiding her through her many successes.
