SYMPHONY ROCKS: Legendary drummer Stewart Copeland brings 'Tyrant's Crush' to San Antonio

Stewart Copeland, founding member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band The Police, has gone beyond his work with the legendary 3-piece band and is set to hit the stage with a 60-piece orchestra when he joins the San Antonio Symphony for a performance of his new concerto for percussion and a drum kit titled “The Tyrant’s Crush.” What makes this piece so unusual is it’s composed for a trap-set drummer, with the tympani making an occasional appearance, and the dynamic of blending the drum set with a full-scale orchestra. Copeland acknowledges that “this is a first” in the orchestral world.

And on bringing his new concerto to San Antonio, Copeland said his mission is easy.

“My mission is to light up the hall and burn the house down.”

Stewart Copeland performs "The Tyrant's Crush" concerto with the San Antonio Symphony on Nov. 4-5 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
