The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts was designed as a world-class venue for music, dance and theater.
Now it is also a space for visual arts.
This summer, the Tobin Center launched the Art Initiative. Developed by Rick Frederick, director of resident company and community engagement, the program is intended to introduce audiences to the work of San Antonio artists who are known at a national and international level.
Recently, the Tobin Center partnered with AIA San Antonio and the city’s Department of Art and Culture to host “Paper Cloud,” a sculptural installation by Cade Bradshaw and Stuart Allen of Bridge Projects. The piece — comprised of illuminated cloud forms made out of paper arranged around wire frames and suspended from the ceiling — was installed in the lobby, where it will remain on view through the end of the year.
The project started when Frederick approached Michael Fresher, the Tobin Center’s president and CEO, with the idea of inviting local curators to place work in the the lobby of the administrative building next door.
