TOSA | In A Memory Palace

“In the memory palace, I am sometimes one thing, sometimes another. Today I make a grand entrance… Yesterday I was huddled in the dark of a barn like a thief.”

In A Memory Palace confronts one of the pressing issues of our time: what does a person do when their beloved homeland, through violence and oppression, becomes unrecognizable? A dance at the border of this world and the next, In a Memory Palace draws on the stillness of Noh as the spirit of a once‑celebrated Viennese couturier reaches across time to tell her story of migration. Live music, video, and masked performance evoke interwar splendor, echoing into present‑day America where what went unspoken for too long finds release.

In A Memory Palace is a co-production between Theatre Nohgaku, The Orchestra San Antonio, and University of the Incarnate Word. For more information, please visit here.

Founded in 2000, Theatre Nohgaku brings classical Noh drama of Japan to the wider world. With Japanese master performers, Theatre Nohgaku performs original and traditional works in Japanese and English, and educates audiences, students, and the general public about the arts of Noh, reaching across boundaries of culture and language to tell stories that reflect our shared humanity.

One of the leading comprehensive universities in Texas, University of the Incarnate Word strives to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens. UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and the fourth-largest private university in the state.
