The Harvey E. Najim Arts Integration Program is the backbone of our practice in education which is why we partner with schools and teachers to provide professional development in teaching with the arts.
Arts Integration increases student engagement, creates a dynamic classroom environment, and levels the playing field for student academic success.
Through a partnership with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Partners in Education Program, The Tobin Center provides training for classroom teachers in art integration. Through these techniques, the arts become a regular part of the classroom experience and leverage learning in science, language arts, mathematics and social studies. Our partnership with Wolf Trap has allowed us to expand to include teachers of our youngest students, pre-k and kindergarten.
In October 2023, philanthropist Harvey E. Najim made a $300,000 commitment to Generation NEXT to ensure teachers throughout Bexar County can receive training in Arts Integration strategies. To recognize Mr. Najim’s extraordinary generosity, we have named the program the Harvey E. Najim Arts Integration Program.

Through the use of music, dance, puppetry, role play, and story dramatization, professional Teaching Artists train early childhood educators in performing arts-based techniques to enhance all areas of development through active play.
The word Avanzando means “advancing” or “moving forward.” In music, it is also a directional term that signals progression—an intentional push ahead in energy, growth, and purpose. This meaning is at the heart of the Avanzando Mariachi Conference: advancing the art of mariachi while uplifting those who teach and perform it.
Avanzando is a mariachi professional development conference designed for both educators and students. This conference was created to provide a space where mariachi educators can become students again—learning, growing, and gaining meaningful resources to take back to their programs. At the same time, students will work alongside master-level musicians to sharpen their skills, strengthen their musicianship, and develop strong rehearsal habits.
This year, Avanzando will welcome seven presenters from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Each will lead sessions on a variety of topics, with the goal of bridging gaps in knowledge for mariachi education in Bexar County and beyond.
